ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

PERMITTED ELECTRONIC ITEMS

• Cell phones
• Laptops, tablets, iPads, iWatches, and similar computing devices (referred to as “computing devices”)
• Portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS (consistent with Chancellor’s Regulation A-413)

USE RESTRICTIONS

• Cell phones, iWatches, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may NOT be turned on or used while in school or on school property.
• Cell phones, iWatches, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may NOT be turned on or used during class, after-school activities, school-sponsored programs, quizzes, tests, examinations, or state standardized examinations.
• Cell phones, iWatches, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may NOT be turned on or used during school fire drills, emergency preparedness exercises, in bathrooms, auditorium, gymnasiums, cafeteria, school yard, dance room, staircases, or any school-wide shared space area.

CONFISCATION AND RETURN OF ELECTRONIC ITEMS

• If the electronic device is visible or turned on during the school day, a staff member or administrator will ask the student to turn it off or put it away while in school.
• If the student continues to use the device after being asked to put it away, the device will be retrieved and returned at the end of the day. The family will be contacted about this action and the reasons for the retrieval.
• If the student refuses to put the device away, the family will be contacted and asked to come to the school to remove the device. If a family member cannot come and the device creates a distraction to learning, the student will be placed with a crisis intervention staff member.
• If the electronic device is heard on school premises, staff and administration will ask the student to reveal the electronic device.

DISCIPLINE

Students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment systems in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“ISUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.
